Souvenir Journal
Students will use the Souvenir Journal to reflect on how Chumash can inform their daily lives and provide guidance for how to live in accordance with Hashem’s will. While this is true for every part of Chumash, the stories of Chumash naturally lend themselves to children finding points of personal identification. The goal of our souvenir journal is to help students recognize that every time we “visit the Chumash,” we should be thinking about what we can take home with us.
This basic structure can be effective at different levels of complexity based on the age and intellectual maturity of the child. The activity should be introduced in stages, using the prompts that the teacher provide to ensure that each student understands how to bring back a valuable souvenir.
Level 1 requires a minimum skill of writing, and primarily asks students to restate or apply what they have learned.
Level 2 asks students to elaborate on their answer and/or explain their reasoning process.
Level 3 asks students to choose between two or more alternatives and to justify their choice.
